Firm operations, made repeatable.
n8n is a widely adopted visual workflow-automation platform used to connect applications, data and decisions. Here, it works as the private operational layer behind Hermes: a lawyer asks in plain language, Hermes chooses the right capability, and your self-hosted n8n engine coordinates the repeatable work. The lawyer keeps control of every legal conclusion and external action.
Independent implementation. LexEdge AI is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or partnered with n8n, Nous Research, or the Hermes Agent project.
A visual engine for repeatable work.
n8n lets a team build workflows from connected steps instead of writing an entire integration from scratch. A workflow can start when Hermes calls it, when an email arrives, on a schedule or through a secure webhook. It can then read approved systems, apply rules, request AI analysis, create a draft and return a structured result.
Its self-hosted Community Edition makes it attractive to privacy-conscious firms: the workflow engine, credentials and execution records can remain on infrastructure the firm controls. Optional Business, Enterprise, cloud and third-party services have separate terms and costs.
Something starts the workflow
A lawyer asks Hermes, a message arrives, a daily schedule runs, or an authenticated system sends an event.
n8n connects the steps
Nodes read permitted data, apply deterministic rules, call approved tools and maintain the order of operations.
The lawyer receives a result
Hermes explains the output in plain language. Drafts, deadlines and external actions remain subject to professional review.
Workflows mapped to legal practice.
These capabilities cover the operational path around professional judgment: capture the instruction, organise material, prepare analysis, record the result and surface the next decision. They do not replace legal review.
Intake & conflicts
Turn a new enquiry into structured work while keeping conflict clearance and uncertain correspondence visible.
Create the first matter record
Capture client and matter details, generate a matter ID, create a Drive folder, update the register and prepare a welcome communication.
ImplementedScreen before opening
Compare prospective and adverse parties with the firm’s registry, preserve the basis and route possible conflicts to human review.
ImplementedTriage the shared inbox
Classify messages, match them to a matter, flag urgent items and place unmatched correspondence in a review queue.
ImplementedDocuments & research
Classify incoming material, prepare the right first-pass memo and ground research in connected sources.
One doorway for every file
Accept material from Drive, Gmail or Hermes; extract text; classify the document; route it to type-specific analysis; flag low confidence.
ImplementedBuild a research pack
Search judgments, legislation and approved past-matter sources, synthesise the results and save a reviewable report.
ImplementedSurface the tax response path
OCR and classify a GST notice, extract apparent demand heads and dates, flag urgency and prepare a response outline for verification.
ImplementedContracts & drafting
Move from first review through drafting, comparison, obligation tracking and data-room analysis.
Set the risk lane
Read an inbound contract, identify its class, assign risk and priority, and return a structured handling route.
ImplementedExplain what changed
Compare two versions mechanically, check changes against the firm playbook and produce a focused deviation report.
ImplementedTrack promises after signature
Extract duties, owners, triggers, due dates and renewals from an executed agreement and add them to the firm’s register.
ImplementedDraft from approved structure
Load a template and matter facts, prepare sections individually, assemble the document and save it for legal review.
ImplementedPrepare the response package
Extract matter facts from an incoming notice, generate a first draft and save the result to the controlled workspace.
ImplementedLitigation & deadlines
Prepare for hearings, monitor active matters and turn versioned limitation rules into reviewable calendar records.
Assemble the brief
Locate matter documents and authorities, build a chronology, draft hearing notes and create a readiness checklist.
ImplementedReport only what changed
Check active cases on demand or daily, compare the latest state and surface new listings, orders or hearing dates.
ImplementedOwn the reminder trail
Look up versioned rules, apply configured court holidays, record the result and stage reminders and escalations.
ImplementedOperations & finance
Scale data-room review, invoice handling and draft time reconstruction without surrendering final approval.
First-pass the data room
Read and classify files, apply deterministic red-flag rules, record findings and identify material that could not be processed.
ImplementedCheck before accounting
Extract invoice data, detect possible duplicates, validate totals, update the accounting register and flag exceptions.
ImplementedReconstruct draft narratives
Combine calendar, sent-mail and document activity by matter, then prepare draft-only billing entries for lawyer review.
Pilot · testingOne request. Controlled execution.
Hermes uses the Model Context Protocol to discover the workflows that n8n exposes. The lawyer does not need to operate the workflow editor for routine use.
No licence fee does not mean no operating cost.
The open-source path avoids per-user software licensing. Your actual cost depends on where you run it and which optional services you connect.
Open-source core
Hermes Agent and a self-hosted n8n Community Edition can be used without a commercial licence fee, subject to their respective licences.
Your machine or server
Run locally on existing hardware or pay for private server capacity, backups, monitoring and administration.
Your chosen providers
Cloud AI, email, storage, OCR, legal databases and case-data providers may charge usage or subscription fees.
Keep the workflow engine inside the firm.
Self-hosting lets the firm control the database, credentials, logs and network boundaries. For a completely local path, use local models and local storage. Every external connector changes the privacy boundary and must be reviewed.
A production privacy checklist
- Authenticate every Hermes–n8n gateway
- Use named-user permissions instead of public links
- Store credentials in n8n’s encrypted credential vault
- Remove personal recipients and hardcoded resource IDs
- Add approval gates before email, sharing or calendar actions
- Log access without storing unnecessary client content

What is n8n doing in Hermes?
n8n coordinates repeatable multi-step operations such as reading an approved register, creating a folder, comparing documents, updating a calendar or preparing a notification. Hermes remains the conversational legal agent and calls the workflow as a tool.
Are all 17 workflows production-ready?
Sixteen have implemented workflow definitions. The time-capture workflow remains in pilot testing. Before production, every workflow must be configured for the firm, secured, tested with representative data and placed behind appropriate approval gates.
Can n8n act without lawyer approval?
Technically, a workflow can be configured to perform actions automatically. LexEdge’s recommended legal deployment is draft-first: client messages, external files, filing-related steps and material record changes should require explicit professional approval.
Is the n8n layer completely private?
A self-hosted n8n instance can keep workflow coordination within the firm. Complete privacy also requires authenticated endpoints, secure credentials, restricted logs, private storage and local models. Gmail, Drive, cloud AI, OCR and other connectors send selected information to those providers.
Is n8n free for a law firm?
The self-hosted Community Edition has no ordinary per-user licence charge, subject to n8n’s licence terms. Hosting, maintenance and connected services may cost money. Firms needing enterprise features or commercial embedding should review n8n’s current licensing options.
Can we replace Google and OpenAI?
Yes. The workflow layer can be adapted to firm-approved storage, mail, databases and model providers. A local model and local document store provide the strongest data-locality posture.
How are limitation dates kept safe?
The deadline workflow is designed to use versioned firm rules and configured court holidays rather than model memory. Even then, the result must be surfaced as a calculation for counsel verification—not treated as final legal advice.
Can we add our own workflows?
Yes. New workflows should use a defined input and output contract, least-privilege credentials, an authenticated gateway, a dry-run path, human approval for side effects and tests covering normal and failure cases.
Why is n8n popular for workflow automation?
n8n combines a visual editor, reusable integrations, code steps, AI tooling and a self-hosted Community Edition. That makes it useful to both technical and operational teams. LexEdge AI describes it as a widely adopted platform rather than claiming an unverifiable global ranking.
Is LexEdge AI affiliated with n8n, Nous Research or Hermes?
No. LexEdge AI is not affiliated with, sponsored by, endorsed by, or partnered with n8n, Nous Research, or the Hermes Agent project. Their names, marks and logos belong to their respective owners. LexEdge AI independently created the legal customisation, workflow library and packaged user experience.
